Mail Servers and SPAM

We provide full and secure Mail Server facilities to all our clients, including Web Mail. We also have in place a number of procedures designed to reduce the amount of SPAM or UCE (Unsolicited Commercial E-mail) transmitted around the net. Some providers charge an additional fee for anti-spam filters, we provide them free of charge to all who use our services.

Fighting SPAM

A server configured as an "Open Relay" is a spammers best friend because an "Open Relay" will allow them to broadcast their junk mail around the world with little or no worries. We ARE NOT an Open Relay. Our servers all require User Authentication to send messages and will only allow outbound mail from our clients.

Incoming mail is filtered in a couple of ways. The first is a simple check of the senders IP address via a number of black list services. An IP address is rejected if it has been reported as a source of spam or if it's coming from an Open Relay. It can also be rejected if the source is part of a Multi hop system where an Open Relay exists somewhere in the delivery chain. The second method for rejection is based on special keyword filters and a scoring system which is applied to each message received by our servers. If the score reaches a specific level the message is flagged as SPAM and it is deposited into your Junk Mail Folder.

Innocent Players

Unfortunately there is no bullet proof method for dealing with SPAM and as a consequence sometimes innocent people get blocked by the SPAM Black Lists. This often happens because their provider might have an Open Relay or if one of their other clients has abused the system and caused them to be blocked. It can be very difficult to get unblocked once your provider is on the list.

Prior to introducing Anti-Spam filters our mail server was processing up to 30,000 E-mail messages per day. The number of messages has been greatly reduced, however some still gets through - hopefully into your Junk Mail Folder.

Return E-mail Addresses

If your E-mail Address is configured correctly and you have your mail server details correct you shouldn't have any problems sending mail. If, however, your Return E-mail Address is with us and you are using another providers mail server to send messages - at some point in the future your mail will stop working. Providers now require that the return E-mail Address be a valid address on the sending system. This means if you are using, for example, mail.bigpond.com to send messages from your E-mail Account from our server Bigpond will block it at some point in the near future.

Mail Server Id

When you purchased your domain we also created MX (Mail Exchange) Records on your behalf. Unless you specifically asked for a different name - your mail server (in and out) will be mail.yourdomain.com.au, where yourdomain.com.au is the name of your domain. Outgoing mail requires authentication.
